West Lafayette, Indiana: Dog Parks are Temporarily Closed due to Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD)

by | Dec 7, 2023 | Government, Parks, Parks Department, West Lafayette

From the December 6th, 2023 press release:

Community Alert

As a precautionary measure, we have closed the Cumberland and Happy Hollow Dog Parks due to recent cases of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD) in our area. It is important to clean up after your pets in all dog parks, trails, local parks, and your own yard to prevent the spread of CIRD and other diseases that can be transmitted through animal waste.

Remember to use a leash for your dog while visiting West Lafayette Park spaces. Dogs are not allowed to run freely in green spaces or on softball fields. This can harm the fields and create unpleasant and unhygienic conditions for softball players.

Please act responsibly and show consideration to others by disposing of your pet’s waste properly, keeping your dog on a leash, and not entering ball fields with your dog. We also recommend keeping your pets up-to-date on their vaccinations.

Please view this article from Purdue University, which highlights some of the concerns we’re hearing about: Coughing Dogs | Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine

We know that the current closure of our dog parks can be frustrating, so we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. We will reopen the dog parks once we have a better understanding of CIRD, including how it spreads and the risks it poses to the community. Please know that we have made this decision with the safety and well-being of your beloved pets and our community in mind.

Thank you,

West Lafayette Parks Department
